Rima Das's Village Rockstars is India's Official Entry to the Oscars


A young girl in an Assam Village dreams of starting her own rock band….The story of ‘Village Rockstars revolves around this girl, played by Bhanita Das. The national award winning film has been announced to be India’s official entry to the Oscars in ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category.



The film has already garnered praise from many noted film personals in various film festivals around the globe. It was earlier crowned as the Best Film in the 65th National Film Awards 2018. The Director of the film Rima Das, who is a self-taught film maker and never have attended any film school.
Village Rockstars is also the first Assamese movie to be nominated for the Oscars. An all-India jury constituted by the Film Federation of India (FFI) under the chairmanship of Kannada producer Rajendra Singh Babu chose Village Rockstars from among the 28 films that were submitted to the jury for consideration, including star-studded Bollywood productions.
 “I was waiting for this day somewhere in my heart. I am feeling very blessed today. It has been a wonderful journey so far and I have got much more than what I had expected,” Rima Das has been quoted saying after the news of her achievement.
The 91st Academy Awards is scheduled to be held in Los Angeles on February 24, 2019.
It is to be noted that only three Indian films have been ever nominated to Oscars yet – Mother India, Salam Bombay and Lagaan.
Another noted actor from Assam Adil Hussain starer ‘What will People Say’ has also been declared as the Norway’s official entry to the Oscars this year.
